Sample Two-Day Leavenworth Itinerary

SAMPLE 2 DAY ITINERARY
LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS

DAY ONE:

11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. – Enjoy lunch at The Depot, housed in a restored 1887 SF Depot, 781 Shawnee St., Leavenworth, KS.  The Depot offers homemade food made from the freshest ingredients served in a laid back atmosphere. 

1:00  – 2:30 p.m. -Tour the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum.  Take a ride on a restored 1913 wooden carousel and a guided tour of the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum, 320 S. Esplanade Street, Leavenworth, KS. Cost: $6 per person with check directed to C.W. Parker Carousel Museum. 

2:30 – 3:45 p.m. -  Explore the Leavenworth Landing Park, a beautiful one-quarter mile linear parkway along the Missouri River.  The park commemorates the surface transportation links that made Leavenworth important in the 1850's, including riverboats, railroad, wagon escorts, outfitters, trails west and military roads.

Shop in historic downtown Leavenworth which offers an eclectic variety of home, gift, garden, fun and funky jewelry, clothing, specialty teas and foods, antiques, furniture, quilting supplies, pottery and more.

4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Guided Tour of Leavenworth
Tour of the “First City of Kansas”, established in 1854. Points of interest include Fred Harvey’s Home, Carroll Mansion, Buffalo Bill Cody, numerous other historic homes, the renovated 1888 Union Depot, Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” Chapel and the “Big House” which is the United States Federal Penitentiary—drive by only!  The cost for the guided city tour will be a $40 flat fee.   Your guide will meet you to step-on in the parking lot directly across from the Carousel Museum. They will then need to be dropped off at her step-on destination when the tour is complete.

5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. –  Check into the hotel and freshen up for dinner. 

6:15 p.m.– 7:30 p.m. Dinner at a local restaurant  Speak with us to find out the variety of options and locations that we have to accommodate your group. 

DAY TWO:

8:15 a.m.- 9:15 a.m. – Breakfast at the hotel.

9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Tour Historic Fort Leavenworth.  View the oldest active military post west of the Appalachian Mountains during a guided tour of Fort Leavenworth. This tour will emphasize the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers and their impact on the fort. Established in 1827, Fort Leavenworth is known as the "Best Hometown in the Army" and features the Buffalo Soldier Monument, the Frontier Army Museum, Oregon and Santa Fe Trails and more.  A U.S. photo ID is required to enter Fort Leavenworth.  The cost for the guided Fort tour will be a $40 flat fee, payable directly to your tour guide.  Your tour guide will meet your bus at the Visitor Control Center at the intersection of 4th Street and Metropolitan.

10:45 a.m.- 11:15 a.m. Tour the nationally-recognized Buffalo Soldier Monument, which was dedicated in 1992 by General Colin Powell. Groups may meet members of the Kansas City Buffalo Soldiers at a cost of $4 per person, payable to the LV/KC Buffalo Soldier Association.

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Lunch at The Solarium Buffet located inside the Frontier Conference Center and enjoy freshly-prepared meats, salads, pasta and side dishes, along with a dessert bar for only $14.95. No tax is charged and drinks are included. The address is 350 Biddle Boulevard, Fort Leavenworth and it is adjacent to the golf course.  Payment can be made by cash, credit card or check made payable to the Frontier Conference Center at time of service.

12:45 p.m.- 1:45 p.m. - Visit the Frontier Army Museum which is home to personal artifacts of General Henry Leavenworth, an exhibit depicting the history of African-American servicemen, the Buffalo Soldiers, and many other intriguing galleries and memorabilia from 1804-1917. The museum is located at 100 Reynolds Avenue, Fort Leavenworth, KS 66027. The phone number for the museum is 913-684-3191.  The museum has a suggested donation of $4 per person.  The donation can be made payable directly to the Frontier Army Museum.

2:00 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.  – Visit the Richard Allen Cultural Center and Museum which opened its doors in 1992.  It is located across the street from the historic Bethel A.M.E. Church which was part of the Underground Railroad. The center offers a glimpse into the history of African-Americans locally and nationwide. It was created to ensure that the rich heritage of African-Americans and their profound effect on American society would not be lost. The center is dedicated to researching, collecting, preserving and disseminating the history of African-Americans.  The center is located at 412 Kiowa Street Leavenworth, KS and can be reached at (913) 682-8772. Admission price is $6-$8 per person, based on the visit and or events you choose to include. Payment is made payable directly to the Richard Allen Cultural Center.

3:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. - Visit the Carroll Mansion and gift shop, taking a step back in time. The 1867 Victorian house features elaborate handcrafted woodwork throughout the house, beautiful stained glass windows and elegant antiques from the Victorian age era to the early 20th century. The museum is located at 1128 Fifth Avenue. Cost for the tour is $10 per person.  Payment is made payable to the Leavenworth County Historical Society (LCHS).

4:30 p.m.:  Depart "The First City of Kansas" with lasting memories!
