Dog Friendly Businesses and Adoptions

Dog-friendly businesses

Several Leavenworth shops welcome well-behaved and leashed animals.

The Cheeky Llama Clothier keeps a water bowl filled just outside its entrance, perfect for these hot summer days. The store’s pet supply display offers toys, treats and colorful bandannas, and your dog can accompany you inside to pick out their own purchase. Tankerbelle, a rescue dog-turned-mellow store mascot, would also welcome a scratch behind the ears during your visit.

Dogs are also common sights at two local watering holes. At Bailey’s Irish Pub, leashed and people-friendly dogs are free to settle on the back patio, where a fireplace will keep them warm on chillier nights. And Fluffy’s Swedish Pub gladly accepts dogs into the bar itself – they even keep a Facebook page, Fluffy’s Puppies, to share photos of frequent guests – granted that they don’t display aggression and owners keep track of their whereabouts at all times.

Some other local businesses that welcome dogs are the Kansas Country Store, Westlake Ace HardwareHome Depot, and the Tractor Supply Store

In short, make sure to ask ahead about pet policies before trying to bring your pooch to your favorite businesses. We love the patio spaces at The Suburban and Willcott Brewing Company & Taproom, for instance, but they are limited to service dogs only, which is a common policy around town.

Leavenworth Parks

City leash laws apply to all Leavenworth parks. The six-acre Waggin’ Tails Dog Park allows dogs to roam free when inside the fenced dog runs, one reserved for large pets and another for those under 25 pounds. The only spots where dogs are prohibited are inside the Sportsfield complex and inside Wollman Aquatic Center. If you’d like to take your dog for a swim, you’ll have to wait for the last day of pool season and Wollman’s annual “doggie splash” event.  "Doggie Splash" is usually held the first Tuesday after Labor Day.

Fort Leavenworth parks

The fort boasts two dog parks, one off Hunt Lodge Road and another near the Post Theater. There’s also the Clean Paws Pet Wash, a clean-up kiosk that’s open 24 hours a day; if your dog behaves during their dreaded bath, take advantage of the treat-vending machine inside.
